Ally Tompkins is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over ten years of experience treating a range of issues across a diverse adult population. Ally earned her BA in journalism from Columbia College Chicago and her Master’s degree in clinical social work from Loyola University Chicago.

Ally works with folks seeking therapy as a means of improving their lives. Whether it’s managing stress, finding work/life balance, coping with role changes (marriage, divorce, parenthood, job loss) or working to feel “un-stuck,” Ally creates a warm and inviting environment for her clients to explore the barriers in their lives. Ally also specializes in the treatment of disordered eating, anxiety, OCD, depression, PTSD, grief, and body image disturbance. Her work is informed by a “Health At Every Size” (HAES) framework, allowing her clients to feel accepted and safe in their bodies and in the therapeutic space right from the start.

Ally uses a range of evidenced-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Exposure Response Prevention Therapy (ERP), and Written Exposure Therapy (WET) for trauma. Ally has presented on eating disorder treatment to professionals, consumers, and students. Ally loves to learn and teach and is always seeking out new trainings and workshops to further her expertise in the areas most important to her clients.

Prior to joining Proactive Therapy, Ally was a clinical manager with Eating Recovery Center and Insight Behavioral Health Centers in Chicago, where she helped launch the first-ever residential facility focusing on the treatment of binge eating disorder. In this role, Ally oversaw all daily operations, program and curriculum development, and supervision of therapists and counselors. Before pursuing her career as a therapist, Ally was the director of the research department of a Chicago-based business magazine. In her time as a journalist, Ally reported extensively on Chicago industry news, corporate culture, and workplace trends. As a result, Ally is adept at navigating the issues many of her clients face throughout their careers, from job-seeking and career advancement to managing workplace dynamics and conflict resolution.

Ally welcomes and serves clients for online therapy from anywhere in Illinois.

I tend to take a relaxed and casual approach to my work, where humor and levity have as much a place in the therapy room as feedback, reflection, and curiosity. As a career changer, I know what it's like to be going full-speed ahead down one path only to find out a complete 180-degree turn was in order. And more specifically, as a former journalist, you can rest assured that I am not afraid to ask the hard questions, have the challenging conversations, and dig until we get to the root of the tough problems. When I'm not working, I'm enjoying all that Chicago has to offer, including restaurants, parks, shops, and any new and exciting activities my kids might enjoy.
